THE RETURN OF THE TOAD
10th FEBRUARY 2007

The rain reigned like rain that day but the great Toad was not deterred. That cosmic troubadour (and all us Brighton lunatics), returned to the scene of weird chaos that was “Club Spacetoad” at its’ spiritual home the Prince Albert pub. Yes indeed, here every Monday night Dr. Spacetoad himself with Captain Sensible, the eccentric Roy (of many disguises and personas) and myself, explored the further reaches of the cosmos. (All this was 1994/5 before the Damned reformed with Captain and myself in tow- hooray!) Then we played downstairs in front of the fire that used to singe Cap.’s nether regions, now we ascended to the realm above to play for a crowd of Damned fans, train spotters, Crystal Palace fans and other misfits and mountebanks (whatever they are!)

Thus it was that Dr. Spacetoad took us on a journey up into space and through time assisted by Roy’s cosmic synth-sounds. We played many of the old favourites: “It’s not unusual to be Unusual”, "Trying to be Weird”, a really cracking version of “Don’t Push the River”, the Floyd’s “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun”, “My Old Mate the Coypu” and “Dance of the Toad”. Certain females in the audience, noticing I didn’t have my usual leggings on (there’s no dressing room in the Albert), suggested I remove my trousers! Well, I couldn’t possibly desecrate the sacred space of the Toad in such fashion, could I? Anyway, Coypu Consciousness was achieved to the high enlightenment of all present (or was it the beer?)

That evening we did it all again in the Hobgoblin pub and the next day recorded a load of songs, so expect to hear more of the Toad soon. (You have been warned!)
