ZODIAC - OXFORD
Tuesday 22nd November 2005

The Zodiac looked completely full to me for this one, with a pretty large proportion of the crowd already in when Wreckless Eric took the stage.

Highlight of Eric's set was during Whole Wide World (which I've just realised starts with www - Eric a man ahead of his time), when Captain "played" the drums. This is seemed to take Eric completely by surprise and he threatened to join the Damned on stage later - "that'll really screw 'em up!". Great version of a great song.

The Damned came on to do an energetic set comprised of the numbers that have now settled down to be the regulars on this tour. Anti Pope and Absinthe now both have gone awol but Thirteenth Floor Vendetta has definitely been added (along with Eloise).

The two new songs are both taking on a distinctly Damned edge - I reckon Perfect Sunday would make a good single. Sounds like there are some good harmonies in there. Alone Again Or also sounds rather good live - DV does a fine job of vocalising the trumpet part.

I rather naughtily scribbled some notes for this review during a meeting at work while people were droning about something or other, but somewhere along the line I've lost them. Hope they're nowhere incriminating - us senior executives can't be too careful. I'll have to rely on my memory, but other bits that stuck out were:

  • Captain having a cold and sniffling into a tissue from a box placed on top of his speaker cabinet. Naturally the rest of the band where completely sympathetic to his plight, with DV doing some very impressive nose blowing sound effects every time the tissues were brandished.

  • These made Captain laugh and led to him saying "I suppose Vampires don't get colds";

  • Captain playing up his infirmities and hobbling across the stage clutching his back;

  • DV's "this song is Nose, Nose, Nose" (another Captain reference);

  • The lady next to me asking me "which one's Rat Scabies, then"? (she was serious - initially she thought Monty was Rat);

  • New Rose (now placed as the last encore) leading to an explosion of moshing amongst blokes all of whom were well into their forties. One day it'll be like the First World War with only a handful left who can do it;

  • Captain: "They're asking for Happy Talk" Pinch: "Take your ear plugs out - they're saying no, don't do it";

  • Monty's extended intro to Melody Lee while DV had some mic trouble sorted out;

  • DV's holding of the "Smash It Up" shout at the start of the song of the same name.
