BUTTERMARKET - SHREWSBURY

The Damned at Shrewsbury Buttermarket

Arrived in Shrewsbury in time to catch all of Wreckless Eric. The guy is a very funny man and performed very well. I’m not familiar with his stuff and really he isn’t my cup of tea but never the less he did seem to win over the crowd. The last time I saw the Damned in Shrewsbury was April 1981 and the support was the Anti Nowhere League unfortunately for me the support this time didn’t quite cut it like the League did all those years ago.

The Buttermarket is a nice compact venue with a massive balcony so we made our way upstairs to get what turned out to be an excellent vantage point. The Damned opened with Nasty and it was almost as entertaining watching the pit as it was watching the band. It seemed to be kicking off big time in the crowd with bodies flying everywhere but there seemed to be some sort of cohesion about it all.

Anyway I have to say the Band played a blinder and Little Miss Disaster along with Perfect Sunday were absolutely fantastic. The highlight was hearing the new songs let’s hope there are plenty more to come. The Set List included 13th Floor Vendetta, Alone Again Or, Curtain Call, Neat Neat Neat, Smash It Up, Would You Be So Hot, Eloise, Melody Lee, Second Time Around, Love Song, Ignite, Street of Dreams and a few others I’ve forgotten.

For the encore Captain got to live a dream and helped by Pinch & Monty played bass with Tony McPhee from The Grounbdhogs. It went down extremely well with the crowd despite being a complete departure from the Damned sound!

The last song of the evening was New Rose and Captain disappeared from the stage and played the last verse in the middle of the mosh pit. The funniest thing was no one seemed to notice him standing there very bizarre.

Another excellent Damned performance and apparently if DV can remember the words there might me some more new material included in the set very soon!
