This
will be a bit of a briefer review than usual due to my excess alcohol
consumption - I can't remember a great deal.
The
Infidels were the first band on the main stage downstairs and they
opened their set with the Sex Pistols' Bodies. The
Dead Boys classic Sonic Reducer and Stiff Little Fingers' Suspect
Device were also in the set that ended with White Riot, originally
by The Clash. Still
as good as ever, and still as popular as ever among their travelling
barmy army of fans from Lincoln. Hats off to the Infidels. The
UK Subs came on about 9pm-ish I think. The only two songs I can remember
are I Live in a Car and Tomorrow's Girls. 62-year-old
Charlie Harper has still got one of the strongest voices in punk -
long may the Subs continue.
The
Damned came on around 11pm and opened with Love Song, they
also played a couple of new songs, including the fantastic Little
Miss Disaster.
Their
biggest hit, Eloise, still sits alongside newer material like
Democracy really well and Dave Vanian was in fine vocal form
as usual. Captain Sensible's trademark trick of playing guitar with
an ampty beer can always makes me laugh. They went off stage after
the usual push-and-shove of the mosh pit was ignited by Smash It
Up.
And
the encore included Ignite, one of The Damned's finest moments
with great sing-along-ability. Captain also sang Jet Boy, Jet Girl.
Antipope
finished off the night and it was fucking great.
Thanks
to White Rabbit from the Damned message boards for providing the set
list, because I could only remember Eloise at first!
